Statement on the Recovery of Remaining Titan Submersible Debris
[WASHINGTON, DC] Pelagic Research Services (PRS) is gratified in knowing that the U.S. Coast Guard’s Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) has successfully recovered and transferred the remaining Titan submersible debris from the North Atlantic Ocean seafloor on 4 OCT 2023.
Upon discovery of the Titan debris on 22 JUN and the conclusion of Dive 1, the PRS and Horizon Arctic operations team was expanded for the recovery phase to include personnel from the U.S. Navy and their civilian contractor Phoenix International.
Under direction of the U.S. Navy Supervisor of Salvage & Diving (SUPSALV), PRS recovered all items identified and requested for investigation within the allotted recovery time ending on 27 JUN.
Over a six-day period, the PRS Odysseus 6K ROV successfully completed six recovery dives and utilized its heavy-lift capability along with extensive manipulator work loading recovery baskets. All debris brought to the surface in this initial phase was recovered by PRS.
PRS had the proven capability of recovering all the remaining Titan debris from the site, and did recover all items identified and deemed critical under the allotted recovery time aboard the Horizon Arctic. The recent salvage mission was conducted under an existing agreement with SUPSALV.
“We’re relieved to know that the remaining debris has been recovered now. This will clearly assist the investigation into the loss of Titan and help provide additional closure for the families and friends of the submersible crew,” says Edward R. Cassano, CEO of PRS.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, additional updates will be available on the Titan Submersible Marine Board of Investigation webpage: www.news.uscg.mil/News-by-Region/Headquarters/TITAN-submersible.
