PRS En Route to Titan Search & Rescue Site
[Wednesday, 21 June 2023 (13:15 UTC)]
Pelagic Research Services (PRS) mobilized assets for the Titan rescue effort from Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Tuesday (June 20).
After being contacted by OceanGate Expeditions on Monday, we were able to assemble our ROV team of nine and our complete Odysseus 6K system assets within 23 hours. Transported by three C-17 aircraft provided by the U.S. Air Force, the team and assets reached St. John’s, Newfoundland on Tuesday. In just over six hours, all PRS team members and ROV assets were mobilized onto the ship Horizon Arctic for the joint search and rescue mission.
Currently PRS is en route to the Titan search & rescue area, having departed shortly after 0530 local time (St. John’s):
“The effort of the Horizon Arctic team has been nothing less than extraordinary. Our PRS team has merged with the ship’s team to integrate the Odysseus 6K system to commence search and rescue,” Edward Cassano, CEO of PRS, from the Horizon Arctic.
“The emphasis for our support will be the unique depth and operational capabilities of the ROV system and the expertise of our team in deep sea operations.”
The Odysseus 6K is one of the few remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) that can effextively operate at depths up to 6,000 meters.
“We continue to set up the ROV and its systems and estimate arrival at site by early tomorrow (Thursday) morning.”
PRS is in constant communication with the OceanGate team and the evolving effort. We will continue to update the media about the PRS role as we learn more, however OceanGate remains the primary source of current operational information.
